Theological Aspects of the CD

I am an ordained Rabbi who also holds a Ph.D. in Jewish Philosophy. This means that the chants – and the CD as a whole – contain many theological and interpretive readings of the Jewish tradition. In fancy words, the CD is itself a  midrash – both on prior Jewish music as well as in response to an ongoing, centuries’ long inter-textual conversation.

In some cases, I will discuss some of these choices in my comments on each of the tracks. But the CD, too, has a certain theological arc – some of this inadvertent, some quite intentionally construed during the performance and editing processes. I invite the listener to go deeper in his or her listening to discover themes and ideas reflective of twenty years of study of Jewish thought!
